The Cycling for Change Team rolls into Idaho on
Friday, June 11, 2010!

Cycling for Change spawned the local Idaho event, Peddle Past Poverty.

Peddle Past Poverty
was designed to bring greater awareness and increased tangibility to the issue of poverty in Idaho.  To give this issue some camera time, Catholic Charities of Idaho created multiple events designed to engage community members’ at all socioeconomic levels.

The word Peddle, rather than Pedal was strategically chosen to represent the action in the form of a transitive verb meaning to promote an idea insistently.  To do this we need the support of in-kind sponsorships by our community partners.

Catholic Charities of Idaho has chosen to host a 3-day event.  Catholic Charities sees Peddle Past Poverty as the perfect vehicle to generate energy around the poverty initiative in Idaho and to share the progress made by 2010.

Thursday, June 3rd, will be an evening of community partners sharing the struggles and strides made towards the eradication of statewide poverty.  Community partners along with Catholic Charities Staff will view a 45 minute independent show called, “30 Days”. The episode is called “Minimum Wage”.  The show give a family 30 Days to live off minimum wage and show a tally for money left throughout the 30 days, including emergency medical visits, grocery shopping, etc.  “Minimum Wage” will be shown outdoors in a backyard setting.  Blankets, light appetizers, soda, and water will be served.

Friday, June 4th, will host a multitude of events.  Starting at 8:00AM, Boise State University School of Social Work, The Center for Community Building to End Poverty, and Catholic Charities of Idaho will present a community Poverty simulation at Boise State Student Union Building.  Members of the Boise State Football and Basketball teams will be participating in the poverty simulation.  Afterwards, players will be interviewed before beginning their competitive grocery grab held at a local Albertsons store.

Saturday, June 5th, Catholic Charities will host our family ride to end poverty.  Individuals can gather unlimited sponsorship pledges or pay $20 to participate in the ride.  All riders will receive an event t-shirt.  The family ride will begin at St. Mary’s Parish parking lot at 9:30AM and end at St. John’s Cathedral.  Donations support the families served at Catholic Charities of Idaho.  CCI will host a smaller children’s ride called Tikes on Trikes at St. Mary’s local parish parking lot starting at 8:30AM.

We are looking for additional community partnership in Boise.  Interested parties should call Julie Marcum-Hart (208) 350-7484.
