About Us

Inspired after reading Catholic Charities USA Campaign to Reduce Poverty, Fr. Matthew Ruhl, S.J. decided to combine his passion for the poor with his passion for cycling to promote this innovative plan to reduce poverty and thus Cycling for Change was born.

From Memorial Day to Labor Day 2010, the Cycling for Change (C4C) team will span more than 5000 miles across the nation through rural towns and metropolitan cities. Quite an incredible 100 day challenge!
40 million Americans are now living in poverty.

More important than the mileage, is the call to action the cyclists will pose – to reduce poverty in our local communities and beyond.

All along the route the riders will promote the Campaign to Reduce Poverty by calling for communities, individuals, governments and social service providers to make a collaborative effort to address the root causes of poverty. To learn more about the Campaign to Reduce Poverty visit www.catholiccharitiesusa.org.

The team will be composed of up to fifteen thru-riders who will accompany Fr. Matt on the whole 5,000 mile pilgrimage. There will also be opportunities for cyclists who aren’t up for the challenge of 5000 miles to join for predetermined shorter segments.

For more information about joining the pilgrimage, go to Join the Ride.

Communities along the route will be encouraged to:

  • highlight local poverty issues
  • persuade individuals to commit time and talent to the campaign
  • raise funds to benefit local programs
  • invite governments, social service agencies, and businesses to develop concrete, strategic solutions to the national problem of poverty
  • organize awareness events and fund-raisers around the energy generated by Fr. Matt and the C4C team riding through their area. Get Involved!
